Engineering Club & Lego League started meeting during the school day this week! Engineering Club includes students from 1st grade through 5th grade, while Lego League includes 2nd through 4th graders. We focused on exploring materials & practicing sharing ideas with each other!

2nd grade will soon be studying geography, including learning about the continents. Ms. Harlow had her students explore large visual atlases as a way to build background knowledge and increase their success! Students were mesmerized as they explored this type of nonfiction.

4th graders traveled on a boat down the James River last week, where they learned about the local wildlife, identifying different species, and boat safety. Look at all those smiles! We heard so many exciting stories about being on the boat & touching the fish when they returned.

Kindergarten students studied the five senses -- sight, touch, smell, hearing, and taste -- with stories, stations, and more last month. These young scientists used their senses & power of observation to draw the clouds in the sky on one gorgeous day!

Art Club met for the first time this past Thursday, where they worked on creating their own sculptures using wire, hose, and glue. When we stopped by, we saw lots of smiles, encouragement, and joy as students explored their artistic voice more deeply after school.

Last month, Glen Lea students built bridges, towers, & fractions. We made "flabbergasting" foods inspired by world chefs and buses out of recycling. And we explored world records -- finding records for longest nails, most pencils in a beard, & more. We stay busy in the library!

At Glen Lea, we love to reward our students for their hard work. Last month, these kindergarteners earned lunch with their teacher outside & decorating pumpkin cookies together. By having fun together, we also build a sense of belonging for all our Lions!

First graders expanded their knowledge of shapes last month. Classes went for a shape hunt, looking for shapes in the school around them. They also practiced building tangrams with shapes, both on and off pattern block mats!

2nd grade students have been immersed in hands-on exploration of weather and weather tools over the last few weeks. They've used thermometers to find the temperature, noted the rain after last week's storms, & worked together to deepen their understanding in so many ways!

After applications & interviews, we can't wait for our Glen Lea Safeties to start their service around the school this month! Students worked last week to plan how they could help the school, in addition to helping with arrival & dismissal. Next week, they will vote for captain!

Our students love getting books from our book vending machine! Each student receives a token to use on their birthday. They can choose from a variety of fiction & nonfiction. And we didn't forget summer birthdays! Those students will receive a token on their half-birthday.

We are so grateful to the many ways that our community partners support our school community. Our partners recently worked with Ms. Farmer & Ms. Fines to renovate the teachers' lounge, creating an inviting place for community. We celebrated with our first Foodie Friday!

Our 1st graders had so much fun visiting the Fairfield Public Library last week! We had a picnic lunch before a tour where we saw a play kitchen & tried the light wall. We sang, read, and played together, too. One first grader exclaimed, "This is the best day EVER!"
